Situated on the lands of Champagne, the town of Provins was once considered an important commercial place thanks to its Champagne fairs. The economic situation was so flourishing in the 12th and 13th centuries, that it allowed the Counts of Champagne to build its 5 km long ramparts, which served both to protect the city, but also to show their power.
